Not everyone likes theatre nerds, apparently.

It has happened again. A show that I find to be intelligent and well written is dying in the ratings. Subsequently, tonight I am sure we will all be saying Goodbye to:
In their infinite wisdom, NBC has decided to replace it on the schedule with the "Black Donnelly's". Oh yes--witty banter, backstage shennanigans, a rare glimpse in to the world of Live-scripted-sketch comedy is to be replaced by yet another ridiculous crime drama. This time it a Sopranos-wanna-be except with Irish hoods. Huzzah.
"Studio 60" hasn't officially been cancelled, and NBC has ordered 22 episodes.
But there is no scheduled date of return. Good Bye, Studio 60.

Noooooooo!

I hear a lot of people trash talk Studio60. But while it's not a perfect show, even at its worst, it's better than most everything else on TV.

And I'm no hater; I watch a lot of TV, and I firmly believe there's a lot of good TV these days as long as you're willing to seek it out.

I think Studio60 is a victim of being on a Big Network -- the numbers it has to pull to justify an existence at NBC are just insane. A show that's not an instant smash across all demographics has to struggle mightily just to stay on the air, and that's stupid. Most classic shows take time to reach their best, and I think Studio60 is well on its way.

I hope rumors of its demise are greatly exaggerated.

Gird thy loins...

A couple months back I heard on NPR that Studio 60, while not commanding biggie ratings, gets the choice Sorkin ratings that West Wing had. And those viewers tend to be a more affluent group. Hence, very desirable to many an advertiser who'll pay more to reach this bunch. So the good news for us: it's somewhat profitable for NBC to make witty, intelligent programming. Whew.

Leave it to NPR to find that angle.

I just *knew* the demise of Studio60 would touch a nerve! Write letters people!

Tom, touch a nerve you did.

Hey, while we're on this topic... does anyone else loath the theme music for Studio 60?

The composer, Snuffy Smith or something (I'm too lazy to google it) did such a kickass job with West Wing. That theme music makes me swell with patriotic pride, and could perhaps be a new National Anthem with the right words.

But wha happened with the Studio 60 theme? I haven't heard anything as 80s since the music from Law and Order. Honestly, the thing just makes me wince.

(As a side note to a side note: my wife and I joke about how the Law and Order theme would be hillarious if performed by an acapella group.)

Thank God that shitastic show is getting deep sixed by NBC. And thank God 30 Rock is getting a full season.

Studio 60 is just The West Wing set in a TV studio that only exists in your imaginaion (or one of Aaron Sorkin's magic mushroom fuelled trips). I mean the studio looks more like the space station on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It was excruciating to watch, especially Matthew Perry. Jesus, watching that douche act was like watching a junkie trying to pass a kidney stone. And the female lead(the blonde one)has two problems: too tall to be in improv comedy and too blonde/bland. And a pro-life Chrisitan? Really? Come on!

One last thing STOP WALKING AND TALKING, just like you do on the West Wing. We get it, you're busy, it's frantic, the studio is huge, we get it.

And Tom, good luck in England. I look forward to hearing Radio Tiki V.3.0 very, very soon.
